CEREMONIES & MEETINGS

Purpose

The Daily Stand-Up, also known as the Daily Scrum, is a brief and focused meeting held every day in a sprint for 15 minutes. Its primary purpose is to synchronize the activities of the Development Team, inspect progress towards the sprint goal, and identify any impediments that need to be addressed.

Synchronization

Provide an opportunity for the Development Team to synchronize their work and update each other on progress.

Inspection

Allow the team to inspect the work since the last Daily Stand-Up and forecast the work until the next one.

Identification of Impediments

Identify any impediments or blockers that are preventing progress towards the sprint goal.

Attendees

  • Development Team — all members who are actively working on the sprint tasks
  • Scrum Master — to facilitate the meeting and ensure it stays within the timebox
  • Product Owner (optional) — can attend to stay informed but does not typically participate actively

Input

  • Sprint Backlog — the list of tasks and user stories that the team is working on during the sprint
  • Current Progress — updates on what has been completed since the last meeting
  • Impediments — any obstacles or issues that are currently blocking progress

Outputs

  • Updated Team Status — a clear understanding of each team member's current work and progress
  • Identified Impediments — a list of impediments that need to be resolved
  • Plan for the Day — an agreed-upon plan of action for the team to achieve the sprint goal

Meeting structure

Time and Place

The meeting is held at the same time and place every day, typically standing up to keep it brief.

Three Questions Format

Each team member answers three questions:

  • What did I do yesterday to help achieve the sprint goal?
  • What will I do today to help achieve the sprint goal?
  • Do I see any impediments that prevent me or the team from achieving the sprint goal?
Facilitation

The Scrum Master ensures that each member has a chance to speak and that the meeting stays focused.
